The Iron Yard goes global: London!

We have some exciting news: we’re launching our first international campus in London this summer! Classes will begin in July.

How did we get here? Through lots of conversations, lots of research, lots of time on the ground and an incredible amount of support from tech companies and students in London who have been eager to see an educational program like ours launch in the UK. Peter, our CEO, said it best:

The Iron Yard has been developing deep relationships in London for some time now, leading to this exciting milestone. The tech boom in London is well-established and the already significant need for qualified software engineers is growing rapidly. We are excited to help bridge that gap.

Mentorship and women in technology

Public Radio International (PRI) shared a story earlier this week on The World around the dearth of women in technology. The story followed Neha Narula, who is part of the PDOS group at MIT CSAIL. Basically, she’s a Ph.D. who focuses on building systems, understanding how they perform and making them faster. Even with her level of expertise, Neha shares how she still feels alone as one of very few women in this male-dominated field.

There have been points in time when I thought I don’t want to do this anymore. This is hard. This is not enjoyable. I don’t like the interactions that I’m having. I don’t want to be in this environment anymore. But, I’m glad I stuck with it, just to be an example; to show that you can do it. It’s possible. It’s doable. And if you really like this stuff, you should do it. You shouldn’t give up.

Meet Alan Johnson, Director of Product Development

Our team is rapidly growing, and today we’re thrilled to introduce you to Alan Johnson, newly-appointed Director of Product Development for The Iron Yard.

After growing up in both Texas and South Carolina, Alan graduated with a degree in Computer Science from Clemson University. His career path and expertise have focused on building software and building teams at startups. Most recently, Alan was a cofounder of Treehouse, an online-based resource for technology education.
